Dear Steve:

I want to thank you for this article. As the single mother of an 18-year old son, one of the things I immediately realized was that I could not teach my son how to be a good man. I made it a priority to surround him with positive male figures on his journey - my father, my brothers, select young men in our faith community. Praises to God, we have weathered teenage years with relatively few problems - no drug abuse, no alcohol abuse, a wonderful respect & appreciation for elders in the community.

Several years ago, we met Sonia Sanchez & C.T. Vivian at a NBAF event at Ebenezer Baptist Church. After thanking him for his performance, Ms. Sanchez said, "I would give you a hug but I know most young men your age don't do hugs." He was quick to reply, "I DO hugs" and proceeded to lean down (she's so tiny!) and give her a long deepfelt bear hug.

I recount this to say that it is possible to show our young men it is ok to be sensitive and caring men and still be strong, masculine men who can be depended on to give AND receive support, affection and stability. Thank you again SOOO much for your article. I will promote it for others to share and enjoy.
Peace & Blessings to you and your family,
Tonali Jannat
