One of my favorite "Lifewriting" exercises is what I call the "Child's story." This is a short “fairy tale”, about 100 words, about how you grew up to be the adult you are today. “Once upon a time there was a little girl/boy who…” Phrase it in terms that a five year old would understand. The point is to create an emotional link between your current self, and the youngest part of your personality--this is where the passion, emotion, and creativity bubble up. the result of this exercise is to give you a strong foundation from which to combine "adult" concerns and core motivations. Very powerful stuff.
